The whole clan signed the final steel beam going up at the new ballpark. Of course, Sam was much more interested in all of the construction equipment. :)

What's in a Name?

Interesting article from Slate.com about the classic book Names on the Land by George Rippey Stewart. Who knew that Chicago may have first meant "onion-place" or "skunk-town," or that the original name proposed for New Jersey was Albania?

Over the weekend I caught the fact that the theme song to Postcards from Buster is sung by Wyclef Jean. I want to see Eddie Vedder and Michael Stipe get in on this kids TV gig!

The factoids from children's television keep rolling in from this reporter. As I think I've mentioned previously, I'm watching lots of PBS Kids with Sam and Mary Grace these days, and the other day I noticed that the theme song to Arthur is sung by Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. Who knew? BTW, Ziggy was our second choice after Sam. :)

Use the Tap

I read the other day how Americans spend $16.8 billion a year on bottled water. Billion. With a "B." Uhh...hello? Could this money possibly be better spent? Feeding the hungry, repairing bridges, fighting disease, about a thousand other things. And then let's stop complaining about the cost of living, taxes, building libraries and about a thousand other things. At least until that 16.8 billion number is a hell of lot smaller. Ok?

Oh yeah, and there's lots of research now that tap water is just as safe or safer than the bottled stuff. And then the environmental costs - oh boy. As the late, great George Carlin said, "when you're born, you get a ticket to the freak show. When you're born in America, you get a front-row seat."
